Buffalo Bills get nasty in free agency

What a day for the Bills in free agency. Everyone and their mother thought the Bills would rest on their laurels as the rest of the NFL scooped up the high priced free agents and over paid them. Instead Levy, Wilson, Jauron and crew got buck nasty. They through out the richest contract in Bills history to Derrick Dockery 7 years $49 mil and a $16 mil signing bonus. CASH TO THE CAP.

The Bills brass wasn't finished done addressing the offensive offensive line. Langston Walker was then inked for 5 years $25 million and Jason Whittle received a 1 year $800,000+ contract . These moves directly addresses the glaring problem area of the Bills which was the offensive line. The potential lineup will be this:

Jason Peters LT Dockery LG Melvin Fowler C Duke Preston RG and Walker RT

Much improved on paper from last year with Gandy and Villareal. According to Len Pasquarelli of ESPN Docks was the #13 best free agent on the market. Although Clements ($80 mil 8 years w/ SF) was number one and Fletcher ($25mil 5 WASH) number 7, which helps me to discredit the list a bit many teams were high on DD. The other big signing, Walker, is a mammoth of a man at 6'8 345 and hopefully on the rise at tackle. Whittle has been coached up under McNally already and will definitely fill a role of depth at each of the o-line positions.

Something interesting I read in the Buffalo News was that DD actually got raving reviews of Buffalo from none other than Takeo Spikes and Mike Williams. Spikes, allegedly on his way out of Buffalo, and Williams, arguably the biggest bust in Bills history. Their testimonials are possibly what put the final nail in the decision to relocate to Buffalo.

Perhaps that story and these signings will shut up a minority of fans under the presumption that a. The Bills/Ralph Wilson are cheap and unwilling to shell out large sums of money to bring in big free agents and improve this squad. and b. That no free agents would even want to come to Buffalo, hey if players like Spikes and Williams had pleasant experiences playing here then anyone presumably would.

These signings not only greatly improve the o-line but the team. If this new unit gels and plays the level that is now expected, it is perfectly reasonable to assume Willis McGahee, if he remains on the squad, (which he no doubt now should, unless we get a first day pick and bring in a respectable rb) and JP Losman will have improved seasons next year and the offense overall. Now the front office must change gears and put the focus on the defense.

Glaring needs at linebacker, depth needed at the cornerback spots, and a lack of production from the interior of the line have to be addressed. With a solid to decent draft, the Bills are in prime position to make a strong run at the playoffs next year. Even more taken from these signings is hopefully Bills Nation gains some self respect and pride as NFL pundits are actually mentiong the Bills and the Bills taking some lime light away from the 'bres.
